MARINE SAFETY

Our responsibility as Coast Guard Auxiliarists is to help improve our national preparedness. We need to begin the process of learning about potential threats so we are better prepared to react during an attack or event.

The Department of Homeland Security creates and implements preparedness plans; develops procedures and policies to guide structured actions in the event of a terrorist attack. It ensures equal training and exercises to a necessary level of preparedness.

The National Response Plan establishes a single, comprehensive framework for the management of domestic incidents. It is organized to provide the structure and mechanisms for the coordination of Federal authority, responsibility, and support the State, local, and tribal incident managers. It was also created to help in the important homeland security mission of preventing terrorist attacks within the United States. It also helps to reduce the vulnerability to all natural and man-made hazards, minimize damage, and assist in recovery from any type of incident that occurs.

OPERATIONS

COXSWAINS: If you cancel a patrol remember to call Station Yankeetown and tell them you will not be going out. Also print out a hard copy and file it with Sector St. Pete just as if you did the patrol.

FUEL Crunch:
Please operate in the most efficient means. Do multi tasking while patroling. As of July 1 2008 we are the most efficient Division on the west coast of Florida in terms of cost per patrol; our average is $47.31 per patrol.

AIDS TO NAVIGATION

ATONs just do two things. First, they keep you in safe water by the use of the lateral atons on both side of the channel. Second, they will tell you where you are, but only with the use of a chart of the area you are boating in. So without a current chart the atons can’t do their second function so be sure to have or get a chart of any area you intend to boat in if you are not familiar with it.

There are over 1500 ATONS and 4000+ PATONS in the AOR for Sector St. Petersburg. We can greatly assist the Coast Guard by reporting Discrepancies correctly and accurately. It is not necessary for a AV (ATON Verifier) to be Baot Crew Qualified. In such case he/she may go out on the water on a patrol for the purpose of Verifying the ATONS, and will be listed as a trainee on the 5132 even though he/she is qualified an AV.

Remember both ANT St. Petersburg and Station Yankeetown would appreciate a FAX report of any discrepancies.

The numbers are: Yankeetown: 1-352-447-6905 and ANT St. Petersburg: 1-727-824-7633.

COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES

The 15-5 CS Officer has been working with the Flotilla members encouraging them to go on E-Directory and check their names and e-mail addresses so they can get updates from the National Auxiliary on matters of uniforms, security and many other interesting topics. All FCs should encourage their members to check E-directory for accuracy as a first step towards building a better E-Auxiliary.
